Three things caused by sun-damage, and solutions to correct them
Ahhhhhh… School is out, and the temperatures have reached over 100 degrees. It is officially summer time in Las Vegas! But before you grab your beach towel, bottled water, and head off to the pool, beach or water park, know there are 3 things that can happen to you from prolonged exposure to the sun.
Freckles: Remember when you were younger, and you saw your first freckle? It may have been on your body, or it could have been on your face. No matter where, you may have thought “Wow, that is sooo cool!” Fast-forward to the present. Freckles are not cool anymore. While some people may be genetically predisposed to freckling, more often than not, freckles are the result of prolonged, and chronic exposure to the sun. Although freckles are not cause for concern, being “freckle-free” is an aesthetic goal for some. Having a freckle-free face, neck or décolletage may give a person a more youthful appearance. Summerlin Center for Wellness can help get rid of those “cute” freckles with IPL (Intense Pulse Light). IPL is a customized light treatment that can greatly reduce and even remove freckles from the face, neck, décolletage, and hands. With a few treatments, spaced approximately 4-6 weeks apart, you can achieve the freckle-free look that you may have always wanted.
Uneven Skin Tone: Foundation, powder and cover-up– wish you could leave all the make-up behind, yet still have a beautiful, even, and glowing skin tone? Chronic sun-exposure contributes to hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone. Short-term sun exposure results in a tan, but continued exposure stimulates the melanocytes (pigment creating cells in the skin) to create more and more pigment in certain areas. This cycle eventually leads to an uneven skin tone. Good news! Medical technology offers ways to combat uneven skin tone including medical grade skin care products, IPL treatments, and Spectra laser treatments. You can start improving your skin today by applying sunscreen whenever you go outdoors, and wear protective clothing, such as a hat or sun–shielding clothes to cover-up as much as possible whenever you plan to be in the sun for an extended period of time. It’s never too late!
Cancer: This one is a no brainer, right? Most people are aware that prolonged and chronic sun exposure has a direct link to skin cancer.
The risk of getting melanoma, the most aggressive form of skin cancer, increases in a dose-dependent manner with the number of sunburns a person accumulates in their lifetime. Other skin cancers, such as basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, are also linked to ultraviolet radiation. If you have an unusual mole, freckle or marking on your skin, call Summerlin Center for Wellness to have it examined immediately. We at Summerlin Center for Wellness have over 25 years of dermatological experience in detecting and treating different forms of skin cancer.
